Secondary Schools Quiz

This is now an annual event and will next take place on
Friday, 8th February, 2008,
when all of the 12 schools will be invited to attend at
Hereford Technology School for a 2.00pm start.

The whole show, which lasts for about two and a half hours, is organized and run by a sub-committee of the Grimsby and District Quiz League and every school provides two teams of four pupils in each, one of Under 13s and one of Under 15s and questions are set as follows:-

Round 1 Media Mix (Literature, Theatre and Films)
Round 2 Facts and Figures (Maths, Science and IT)
Round 3 Sounds Familiar (Sound recordings)
Round 4 Who, What, Where (Geography, History, R.E.)
Round 5 Sporting Chance (All types of popular Sports)
Round 6 Hot Off The Press (Topical global news from the local Telegraph)

Rounds 1,2,4,5 and 6 have 10 separate questions for each age group but Round 3 has just one set for all. There are also two Picture Quizzes, in colour, which are also common to all teams.

The Quiz is self-financing from the main sponsor, N.E.L.C. , and entry fees from the schools themselves. Every child taking part receives an attendance certificate and those in the first three in the two age groups each receive certificates, as also do the overall winners, who last year, incidentally, were the hosts, Hereford, who carried off the Cup. There are small shields for the overall runners-up and each member of the winners in each age group receive a small trophy as a permanent record of their success.

Local chains, such as McDonalds, K.F.C. and Pizza Hut, occasionally provide meal vouchers for the pupils taking part and we are approaching the local Parkway Cinema this year too. The League also provides a pen for each participant with the assistance of Wilkin Chapman, Solicitors.

The presentations are usually made by someone connected with our main sponsor and, this year, it was thought appropriate to invite the Head of our Host school, the very popular Jim Cunningham, to do the honours in his final year before a well-earned retirement.
